Frequently Asked Questions

about Veterinary Laser Therapy

What is veterinary laser therapy?

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses targeted light energy to support healing, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. It is commonly used for arthritis, soft tissue injuries, post-surgical recovery, wound healing, and chronic pain conditions.

Does laser therapy hurt my pet?

No. Laser therapy is pain-free and well tolerated. Many pets relax during treatment, and some even fall asleep.

Will my pet need to be sedated?

Sedation is typically not required. Treatments are gentle and can be performed while your pet is resting or standing comfortably in a familiar environment.

If your pet is highly anxious or stress-sensitive, please refer to the FAS Scoring page or discuss this with your veterinarian in advance.

How does laser therapy help with pain and healing?

Laser therapy helps reduce inflammation, modulate pain signals, and stimulate the body’s natural healing processes, often resulting in improved comfort and mobility.

Response to laser therapy varies by patient, and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.

How many laser therapy sessions will my pet need?

The number of sessions depends on your pet’s condition. Acute issues may improve in just a few treatments, while chronic conditions often benefit from an initial treatment series followed by maintenance sessions, as directed by your veterinarian.

How long does each session take?

Sessions are typically short and efficient. Treatment time varies depending on the area(s) treated and your pet’s individual needs, but home visits are often streamlined due to the absence of waiting times or clinic delays.

What conditions can laser therapy help with?

Laser therapy is commonly used for:

  • Arthritis and joint pain

  • Muscle strains and soft tissue injuries

  • Post-surgical recovery

  • Wound healing

  • Nerve-related discomfort

  • Mobility support in senior pets

  •

Is laser therapy safe?

Yes. Laser therapy has an excellent safety profile when administered by a trained professional.
Laser therapy may be postponed or contraindicated in certain cases, such as some malignancies. These situations should always be discussed with your veterinarian.

Why choose laser therapy at home?

Home-based treatment reduces stress, eliminates travel, and allows care to be delivered in a calm, familiar environment — especially beneficial for senior, anxious, or mobility-limited pets.

If a visit cannot proceed safely due to patient behaviour, environmental factors, or handling concerns, the service may be modified, paused, or discontinued.

Who provides the in-home laser therapy visit?

In-home laser therapy is provided by Sonia Holicova, BSc., RVT, through SH Mobile Veterinary Nursing Services, in coordination with your pet’s veterinary clinic.

Will my veterinarian still be involved?

SH Mobile provides in-home laser therapy as a veterinary-directed nursing service and does not diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, or establish a veterinarian-client-patient relationship (VCPR).

SH Mobile does not provide emergency veterinary services. In the event of an emergency, clients should contact their attending veterinarian or the nearest emergency veterinary clinic.

How is in-home laser therapy billed?

In-home laser therapy is billed directly by SH Mobile Veterinary Nursing Services and delivered under veterinary direction and clinical oversight.

How are in-home laser therapy fees determined?

In-home laser therapy fees follow a tiered structure, based on the time, setup, and level of support required to safely and comfortably deliver treatment in your pet’s home.

Some visits are brief and straightforward, while others require additional time for positioning, mobility support, or low-stress handling — particularly for senior pets or pets with pain or mobility challenges.

Fees are discussed in advance and confirmed before scheduling.

What does the in-home laser therapy fee include?

The in-home laser therapy fee reflects the complete mobile service, including:

  • Veterinary-directed laser therapy administration

  • Use of specialized Class IV laser equipment

  • Equipment transport, setup, and safety checks

  • Focused, one-on-one nursing care

  • Gentle handling and individualized positioning

  • Client communication and education

  • Documentation and coordination with your veterinary clinic

Is in-home laser therapy more expensive than clinic visits?

In many cases, pricing is comparable to — and sometimes lower than — in-hospital care, particularly when travel, waiting time, and stress-related challenges are considered.

Is in-home laser therapy suitable for all pets?

In-home laser therapy is especially helpful for:

  • Senior or geriatric pets

  • Pets with arthritis or mobility challenges

  • Anxious or stress-sensitive animals

  • Pets who find travel or clinic visits difficult

Your veterinarian can help determine whether laser therapy — and home delivery — is appropriate for your pet.

How do I book an in-home laser therapy visit?

In-home laser therapy visits are scheduled in coordination with your veterinary clinic or following a referral.
